Amethyst, February’s birthstone comes from the Greek word “amethystos” meaning “remedy against drunkenness.” In ancient Greek and Roman times, the rich purple color of amethyst was believed to have properties that prevented those who wore it from becoming intoxicated. The amethyst’s purple tones range from deep, dark violet, to the less desirable pale lavender tones. The rich color of amethyst is associated with royalty and worn in pendants, bracelets and crowns by Egyptians around 3,000 B.C. Amethyst crystal is believed to soothe emotions by alleviating stress, fear, and anxiety.
