Sterling Silver

Sterling silver contains 92.5% of silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. Alloying with copper maintains the silvery color of the metal while increasing its strength. Tarnishing happens when the copper in sterling silver reacts with oxygen and other elements in the air. Platinum is another metal that may be used as an alloy to improve the resistance of the sterling silver to tarnish.
